Actriz francesa. Hija ilegítima de una cortesana, fue animada a seguir la carrera de actriz por el duque de Morny, uno de los amantes de su madre. Después de participar breve tiempo en la Comédie-Française (1862–63), se unió al teatro Odéon (1866–72), donde actuó en Kean de Alexandre Dumas padre y Ruy Blas de Victor Hugo, con el cual encantó al público con su "voz dorada. Al regresar a la Comédie-Française (1872–80), protagonizó Fedra con gran éxito en París y Londres. Formó su propia compañía en 1880 y realizó una gira mundial con La dama de las camelias de Alexandre Dumas hijo, Adriana Lecouvreur de Eugène Scribe, cuatro obras escritas para ella de Victorien Sardou y El aguilucho de Edmond Rostand. Después de sufrir la amputación de una pierna a causa de una herida (1915), se ciñó una pierna ortopédica, y escogió roles en que pudiera actuar principalmente sentada. Es una de las figuras más célebres en la historia del teatro. Fue nombrada miembro de la Legión de Honor de Francia en 1914.
